With the cost of living crisis, there is no surprise that the creative arts are suffering - particularly in the uptake of children learning to play woodwind instruments. Sadly, this has coincided with a time where we are seeing a greater number of young people with mental health issues.
Making music affordable is the driving force behind us developing our loan to buy instrumental service. Our aim is to provide music tuition and instrumental hire for around £100 per term (e.g Sept - Dec) for primary aged children in and around our local community. This breaks down to around £10 per lesson for tuition and instrumental hire.

We currently offer rental packages for:

Our model:
- We buy and restore a second-hand woodwind instruments.

We buy the necessary music accessories in bulk (music stands, music practice books, music book bags, music tuition books).

You pay to hire these resources at a cost of £20 per term (£16 for eligible PPG children)(£5 per month direct debit/£4 for PPG children)

If at any time your child wants to stop lessons, you simply return all items to us at no extra cost.

After 6 terms (2 years), all of these items (including instrument) are yours to keep.
Should we not have any availability of the instrument you wish to learn, we will work with you to try and arrange rental through Somerset Music.

Which Instrument?
Flute Hire

For younger children, curved head joints (making the instrument shorter and therefore more accessible) are available to hire through our rental package (subject to availability).

As your child grows, we will swap it for a normal head joint with the curved head joint being returned (no effect to the rental contract length – 6 terms).
Clarinet Hire

For younger children, mini clarinets are available to hire through our rental package (subject to availability).

As your child grows, the mini clarinet is returned to us and replaced with a full-sized clarinet (no effect to the rental contract length – 6 terms).
Saxophone Hire

Saxophones are available to loan at a cost of £20 per term (£16 for eligible PPG children)(£5 per month direct debit/£4 for PPG children).

This instrument can be returned to us when you wish to buy your own and we will help you find an appropriate saxophone.

Note: this is different to our loan to buy scheme; there is no time limit on the rental but the instrument does not become yours after 2 years rental.
